Uncensored Truth
Rev. Christopher Swick, CPA, CISA
There seems to be much discussion in many circles today regarding what truth really is and who can define truth for any one person or group. Relativism seems to have crept into every facet of our society and even into beliefs that once were considered rock-solid. Even religious denominations have appeared to have allowed relativism to slip into their doctrine and have forsaken once vehemently held truths. Many “leaders” of these religious denominations have traded truth for feeling and sometimes appear to have traded sanity for heresy.
Many people today base truth off what they experience or feel. This is existentialism wrapped up in “feel good” mentality that has contaminated some of the foundational truths of morals and righteousness. This inevitably comes from the depraved mind as a result of man’s sinful nature.
Truth does not depend on one’s feeling or certain experiences that one may have in life. Does that mean our feelings are always contrary to truth? No, that is not a correct assumption. God does place within us a certain understanding of right and wrong. However, man suppresses that understanding by his sinful nature. This suppression blinds the person from understanding the truth. Man’s totally depraved state results in the desire for the things contrary of God and His Truth. (Romans 1:18-32).
Certain truth transcends man’s understanding and is settled. “A Priori” truth does not depend on the experience of man to prove its truthfulness. A priori truth is truth no matter what limited knowledge or misunderstanding man may have. It is defined as “formed or conceived beforehand, presupposed by experience”. For example, God exists whether man experiences or believes in God. This is an “a priori” truth.
The truth of God’s Word stands no matter what people believe, feel, experience or what intellectual arguments are manufactured against it. God’s truth is the most important thing in the universe and should be held out, proclaimed, and obeyed. Unfortunately, due to man’s depraved nature, humans attempt to warp and twist God’s truth to fit their own needs, desires and wants. What a fatal mistake this is for anyone to make. Unfortunately, I see too many doing this very thing.
It pains me to see people today take such a careless view of Christ, the Scriptures, and our Heavenly Father. It hurts my heart to see people believe with some flickering sense of unwarranted security that they are actually Christians but completely and unashamedly flaunt their sin in the face of the Righteous Ruler of the Universe. How dangerous it is to test God’s unwarranted patience by mocking His Holy Name. 1 John 2:4 states, “The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
Many people profess with unadulterated ignorance that they are Christians. However, if you examine a small sliver of their life, it is blatantly obvious that their proclamation does not stand-up against Scripture. II Corinthians 5:17 states, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” How do we apply this passage? The truth is that a Christian’s life is a changed life that is “set apart” from the world. The Christian has been spiritually regenerated and “made alive” by the effectual work of the Holy Spirit. The Christian who was once “dead in your trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), is made alive and is a new creature.
Because of the work of the Holy Spirit, the desires of the Christian are different. The true Christian will no longer desire the things of this world but the things of God. 1 John 2:15-16 makes it abundantly clear that someone who “loves the world” or “the things in the world” is not a child of God. What are these things? Galatians 5 lists “immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these” as just a few the things deemed to be worldly. As a note, this is not an all-encompassing list but an example of what worldly sins dominate the sinner’s mind.
If you have been truly converted (meaning you have repented of your sins and have placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord) your life will reflect this radical transformation. True conversion requires the person to “crucify the old self” and allow Christ to live through them (Galatians 2:20). We must put to death the old corrupt nature by Christ and live through Christ as Christians.
If you have not done this and are still living “in the world” and desire “the things in the world” more than the things of God, you are not a child of God, you are not saved, and you are destined for eternal separation from Christ. Do not deceive yourself into thinking that you are a Christian when your life does not reflect Christ. 1 John 2:3 states, “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.” Hence, if we do not keep His commandments we are not of God. One who continually practices sin is not a child of God.
Examine your life and compare it to the Word of God. The Word of God will reveal to you who you really are and how desperate your need for a Savior is.
Take Christ seriously. What He says is truth. Do not allow the world to blind you from the truth of Christ. Do not deceive yourself by your own self-righteousness and profess to know Christ when you have no desire for Him or the things of God.
Only through Christ can we have eternal life. Only though Christ can we live for Him in this depraved and evil world. Through Christ we can have the fullness of joy. No worldly thing can provide what Christ can provide. Take hold of Christ, repent of your sins, have faith in Him and live.
Otherwise you are already dead.
